CATEGORIES

Award Categories: Awards will be considered in six (5) categories for qualified entries:

  • Mike Simpson ‘Legends of Hunting’ Award
  • Irvin Barnhart ‘Trophy of the Year’ Award
  • Youth Hunting Achievement Award
  • Youth Hunter of the Year Award

GENERAL RULES

General Rules for The 2024 Award Program:

  1. Men and women both will compete for all awards.
  2. For nominees to be eligible for an award, they must be a member in good standing of SCI Houston First for Hunters as of June 1st of the awards year.
  3. For the Irvin Barnhart ‘Trophy of the Year’ and ‘Youth Hunting Achievement’ awards, the applicant must have been a member of SCI Houston when the trophy was taken. (For youth entries, if the youth is not a member then a parent/guardian must be a member).
  4. To be considered, the appropriate entry form, FILLED OUT IN ITS ENTIRETY, must be received by July 1st, 2024 . SCI Houston shall not be deemed liable for delays in deliveries.
  5. Trophies for the Irvin Barnhart ‘Trophy of the Year’ and ‘Youth Hunting Achievement’ must have been taken between July 1st of the previous year, and  June 30, 2024 to be eligible for consideration.
  6. For the Irvin Barnhart ‘Trophy of the Year’, ‘Youth Hunting Achievement’ and Lone Star Beer ‘Buckhorn’ Deer Contest Awards a SCI score sheet must be completed and signed by a registered SCI Measurer for each trophy entry and
  7. A photo of hunter and trophy in the field must accompany SCI score sheet.

Awards will be presented at the sole discretion of the SCI Houston Awards Committee, and all awards may not be presented depending on the quality and quantity of entries received. Criteria for all awards include not only the size of the trophy but species, the difficulty of the hunt, method of take and location (see details below for additional criteria for some awards). The decision of the Awards Committee is final.

Lifetime Achievement

Mike Simpson “LEGENDS of HUNTING” Award

The Mike Simpson “Legends of Hunting” Award is the most prestigious hunting award offered by SCI Houston First for Hunters … GLOBAL! This award is a lifetime achievement award given to one recipient each year that has gone above and beyond in both hunting and service to the hunting community and is a tribute to a living legend and co-founder of the SCI Houston First for Hunters Chapter, Forest (Mike) Simpson. Mike, past President of SCI First for Hunters … GLOBAL!, is the only modern day hunter to have won the Weatherby Award, SCI International Hunter Award, the Conklin Award, AND be a member of the SCI Hunting Hall of Fame. Nominees will be judged on the following criteria:

  1. the number and quality of animals hunted (30%)
  2. the number of countries and states hunted (20%)
  3. service work to the hunting community in the local, national and international arena (20%)
  4. service work for SCI Houston First for Hunters … GLOBAL! (20%
  5. being a good ambassador for and well respected by the hunting and shooting community (10%).

For nominees to be eligible for consideration, they must be a member in good standing of SCI Houston First for Hunters as of July 1, 2024.

Trophy of the Year

Irvin Barnhart
TROPHY of the YEAR Award

The Irvin Barnhart Awards are named for a Lifetime Member of SCI First for Hunters … GLOBAL!. Irvin’s first safari in 1972 was a life-changing experience for him. It was the first of 81 trips to 16 countries in Africa, and he eventually hunted six of the continents of the world. Irvin served on the SCI Record Book Committee for Africa for 29 years, won all of the major SCI hunting awards, Houston Safari Club’s Frank Green Award, and the prestigious Weatherby Foundation International Trophy. He was also a member of over forty conservation organizations, a strong contributor to their preservation efforts and donated many hours of hunts on his ranches to help raise funds for conservation and preservation.

Irvin Barnhart Awards will be given for up to five (5) of the best free-range trophies taken between July 01, 2019 and June 30, 2024, anywhere in the world with a qualified entry for men, women and youth hunters alike, whether by rifle, muzzleloader, pistol or bow. For nominees to be eligible for consideration, they must be a member in good standing of SCI Houston First for Hunters … GLOBAL! as of July 01, [year].

Youth Achievement

Youth Hunting
ACHIEVEMENT Award

To qualify for the ‘Youth Hunting Achievement’ Award, the candidate must be a full-time student (college included), male or female. At the discretion of the Awards Committee, a ‘Youth Hunting Achievement’ Award will be presented to all eligible youths entering a trophy with a qualified entry taken between July 01, 2019 and June 30, 2024 according to the rules listed here. Any method of take is allowed

Hunter of the Year

Youth HUNTER of the YEAR Award

To qualify for the ‘Youth Hunter of the Year’ Award, the candidate must be a full-time student (college included), male or female.

Requirements for Youth Hunter of the Year Award consideration include:

  1. note of special achievements, such as conservation projects undertaken with photos
  2. hunting achievements with photos of the candidate and their trophies
  3. an essay on what the American hunting legacy means to them 
  4. All candidates for Youth Hunter of the Year Award must be sponsored by an adult member of SCI Houston, with a letter sent requesting the youth be considered for the award.
